This month, we continue our conversation about ways to make Sterile Storage as efficient as possible to prevent delays in the OR. Last month we discussed replacing traditional plastic bin storage systems with fine mesh wire basket shelves and dividers to increase your capacity by up to 60%. Now, let’s discuss how to keep everything in view for faster picking.
The best way to find what you are looking for is to ensure everything is in view, right? Some ways to do this are:
• Label All Supplies: Make sure to label ALL supplies with both the proper product name and the common name. This will ensure that everybody can find what they are looking for regardless of what you call it.
• Signage: Label supply carts by specialty (Joint Replacement, Sports Med, Cath.). This allows for picking a case by the procedure to be performed. We’ll talk more about this in March.
• Eliminate Plastic Bins: In addition to plastic bins requiring maintenance and wasting valuable shelf space, they also reduce visibility, especially darker bins.
• Pull Out Basket Shelving: Fine mesh basket shelving allows for overall better visibility, but pull-out fine mesh basket shelves give you better visibility AND easier access. These baskets glide out to easily view the supplies on the shelf so you can just grab and go.
Consider these ideas when given the opportunity to update or create the ideal Sterile Storage solution for your SPD. This will decrease picking time and help to keep your OR running smoothly.
